After check-in and lunch at your lodge, visit the National Memorial Chorten and, in the late afternoon light, Buddha Dordenma, the 51 m bronze Buddha on the hill above the city. Dinner at the…
Thimphu morning · Over Dochula Pass to Punakha — In the morning, while your guide collects the Route Permit for Punakha (issued on working days), visit the Folk Heritage Museum and the Institute for Zorig Chusum, where students learn Bhutan's traditional arts (weekdays), or, from Thursday to Sunday, the Centenary Farmers' Market. Then drive to Punakha (about 75 km, 2.5–3 hours) over the Dochula Pass (3,100 m), with its 108 chortens and, on…
Punakha Dzong · Khamsum Yulley Chorten · Chimi Lhakhang — A full, easy-paced day in the Punakha valley. In the morning, walk about 45 minutes uphill through rice fields to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a temple built by the Queen Mother, with views up and down the Mo Chhu valley. Visit Punakha Dzong, Bhutan's most beautiful fortress, where the kings are crowned, and walk across the long suspension bridge nearby. In the afternoon, walk about 20…
Punakha to Paro · Kyichu Lhakhang and Rinpung Dzong — After a leisurely breakfast, drive back over the Dochula Pass to Paro (about 125 km, 4–4.5 hours), stopping for lunch on the way. No visa needed, but Indian citizens need a free Entry Permit and must pay Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of ₹1,200 per person per night; children aged 6–12 pay half (₹600) and younger children are exempt. Carry an Indian passport valid for at least 6 months, or a Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission. Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are not accepted. Children without a passport need their birth certificate (and a school ID if they have one). The Entry Permit is issued on arrival at Paro airport or the Phuentsholing border, or can be applied for online in advance. It covers Thimphu and Paro only; the Route Permit for Punakha is issued in Thimphu on working days, and our guide arranges it. Since April 2026, Bhutan requires every tourist, Indians included, to be accompanied by a licensed guide.
Good to know
Luxury lodges in Bhutan are small and fill early, especially in March–May and October–November. Book at least 2–3 months ahead for these seasons.
Dress code for dzongs and temples: full-sleeved shirts with collars, long trousers or skirts below the knee, no caps. Photography is not allowed inside temples.
The Tiger's Nest hike is moderate to strenuous at altitude. Go at your own pace; a horse can be hired for the first part uphill, and the cafeteria viewpoint already gives a good view of the monastery.
Indian rupees are accepted at par with the ngultrum. Luxury lodges accept cards; carry some cash for small shops, monuments and tips.
Thimphu and Paro are cool at night for most of the year; Punakha is lower and warmer. Pack layers and a warm jacket.
Bhutan restricts tobacco: smoking in public is banned, and cigarettes must be declared with duty paid. Drones need special permission.
