Highlights

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Arrive Chandigarh · Drive to Shimla — Our driver meets you at Chandigarh airport or railway station and drives you to Shimla (about 115 km, 3.5–4 hours). After check-in, walk along the Mall Road and the Ridge, with Christ Church at one end. Sleep early; tomorrow is a long day.
  2. Shimla to Kalpa along the Sutlej — Leave early and drive to Kalpa (about 220 km, 8–9 hours) via Narkanda, Rampur and the Sutlej valley, climbing into Kinnaur after Jeori. The road narrows after Karcham and is cut into the cliffs in places. Kalpa, at about 2,960 m, faces the Kinner Kailash range, which is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. Check in and rest.
  3. Sangla valley and Chitkul · Acclimatisation day — After breakfast, drive into the Baspa valley to Sangla and on to Chitkul (about 60 km, 2.5 hours each way), the last village on the road before the Tibet border at about 3,450 m. Walk by the Baspa river and through the village, then stop at Kamru Fort in Sangla on the way back if time allows (entry by local custom; dress modestly). Return to Kalpa for a second night; this day at a moderate…
  4. Kalpa to Kaza via Nako and Tabo — Leave by 7 am for the longest drive of the trip, about 200 km to Kaza (8–9 hours). You pass the Sutlej–Spiti confluence at Khab, the small lake at Nako village and, in Spiti, Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 CE, whose mud-walled halls hold old murals (photography inside is not allowed). Reach Kaza (about 3,800 m) by evening, drink plenty of water and rest; mild headache on the first night is common.
  5. Key Monastery, Kibber, Langza and Hikkim — Take the day slowly. Visit Key Monastery, which stands on a hill above the Spiti river, and drive on to Kibber and the Chicham bridge across a deep gorge. In the afternoon, go up to Langza, with its large Buddha statue and fossil-bearing slopes, Hikkim, home to one of the world's highest post offices, and Komic. These villages are at about 4,300–4,500 m, so walk slowly and come back down to Kaza…
  6. Kaza to Chandratal over Kunzum Pass — After breakfast, drive to Chandratal (about 95 km, 4–5 hours) via Losar and over Kunzum Pass (about 4,550 m), where drivers stop at the Kunzum Mata temple. Check in at a camp near the lake (camps are a short drive or about 2 km from the shore), then walk to Chandratal in the afternoon. The camp night includes dinner and breakfast; tents have shared or attached basic toilets, and nights are cold…
  7. Chandratal to Manali via Batal and the Atal Tunnel — Leave early for Manali (about 120 km, 6–7 hours). The stretch from Batal to Gramphu is one of the roughest roads in Himachal, with loose rock and stream crossings that are easier in the morning, so the driver sets the pace. After Gramphu, you drive through the 9 km Atal Tunnel and come down to Manali by afternoon. Check in and take a hot shower; the evening is free for Mall Road.
  8. Departure from Manali — After breakfast, we drop you at Manali bus stand for the overnight Volvo to Delhi or Chandigarh, or at Bhuntar (Kullu) airport (about 50 km, 1.5–2 hours). If you have time before leaving, Hadimba Temple and Vashisht's hot springs are close to town (entry and any offerings at your own cost). A drop to Chandigarh (about 310 km, 8–9 hours) can be arranged at extra cost.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask

Why does the trip start in Chandigarh and end in Manali?

Going in through Kinnaur and out through Manali lets your body adjust to the altitude slowly. Coming in from the Manali side means climbing to over 4,000 m in one day, which is harder on most people.

Can senior citizens or small children do this trip?

It is best for fit adults and children over about 8 years. The altitude, long drives and basic stays in Spiti are tiring. Senior citizens should get their doctor's approval first.

What is the Chandratal camp like?

It is a Swiss tent with beds, blankets and basic toilets, with dinner and breakfast served in a dining tent. There is little electricity and no heating, and nights are cold, so pack warm clothes.

What if a road is closed?

Mountain roads in Spiti can close for landslides or snow. Our driver and team will change the plan for your safety; any extra night or cost caused by closures is paid locally.

Can we do this trip in October or winter?

Early October is sometimes possible but cold, and Chandratal and Kunzum may close. From November to May the Chandratal road is closed; winter Spiti trips go only in and out through Kinnaur.
