Good to know
Many temples on this coast ask men to remove shirts and vests before entering the inner shrine. Carry a dhoti or angavastram; women should wear a saree, half-saree or churidar.
Temples here usually close for a few hours in the afternoon (often about 1:30 to 5 pm at Kollur, and around midday at Udupi and Dharmasthala). Check timings before travel.
Dharmasthala is very busy on weekends, public holidays and during Laksha Deepotsava (usually November/December). Weekday visits are calmer.
Phones are not allowed inside some temples. Use the deposit counters, and avoid photography inside.
The coast is warm and humid all year. Carry light cotton clothes, an umbrella in the monsoon, and drink plenty of water.
Questions travellers ask
Can we stay at Kollur instead of making a day trip?
Yes. Kollur has simple lodges and a few hotels. Staying there lets you attend the early-morning or evening puja. Ask us for this version.
Can we add Murudeshwar or Gokarna?
Yes. Murudeshwar is about 60 km from Kollur and Gokarna a further 75 km. Adding them needs one or two extra nights.
Can we add Kukke Subramanya and Sringeri?
Yes. Kukke Subramanya is about 55 km from Dharmasthala, and Sringeri is about 100 km from Udupi. Each needs about one extra day.
Are the temple meals vegetarian?
Yes. The prasada meals at Udupi and Dharmasthala are simple vegetarian South Indian meals, served free to devotees.
Can we arrive by train from Hyderabad or Vijayawada?
There is no direct daily train from Vijayawada; most guests fly to Mangaluru via Hyderabad or Bengaluru. We can book flights separately.
