Good to know
Register online on the Shrine Board website before travel, then collect the RFID card in Katra. You must start the yatra within the time printed on the card (usually a few hours).
Helicopter, battery car and Bhawan–Bhairon ropeway tickets are sold on the Shrine Board website and sell out quickly in peak season. Book as soon as dates are fixed; helicopter flights stop in bad weather.
Phones and cameras are usually not allowed beyond a point near the Holy Cave. Use the free cloakrooms at the Bhawan, and carry minimal luggage.
The track is paved, lit and has shelters, food stalls and medical points. Wear good walking shoes, carry a raincoat and a warm layer (nights at the Bhawan are cold), and drink water regularly.
Senior citizens and people with heart or breathing problems should consult a doctor first. Ponies and palkis are available, and the battery car from Ardhkuwari is reserved mainly for seniors and the differently abled.
Questions travellers ask
How long is the walk to the Bhawan?
About 12–13 km one way from Banganga, climbing roughly 1,000 m. Most people take 5–7 hours up and 4–5 hours down. With the helicopter to Sanjichhat, you walk only about 2.5 km each way.
How do we book the helicopter?
Tickets for Katra–Sanjichhat are sold only on the official Shrine Board website, usually opening a few weeks ahead, and are non-transferable. Fares have been around ₹2,000–2,500 per person one way. Do not pay agents who claim to sell tickets outside the official site.
Can we stay overnight near the Bhawan?
The Shrine Board runs rooms and dormitories at the Bhawan and Ardhkuwari, which can be booked on its website. They are basic and limited. This package has both nights in Katra hotels.
Is a darshan time slot needed?
The RFID card controls entry. Darshan itself is in a queue at the Bhawan, which can be 1–4 hours on busy days and much longer during Navratri.
Can we combine this with Srinagar or Patnitop?
Yes. Patnitop is about 85 km from Katra, and Srinagar about 250 km (7–8 hours by road). Ask us to add Kashmir days.
