Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Guwahati · Kamakhya Devi darshan — Our driver meets you at Guwahati airport (about 20 km from the city, 45–60 minutes) or railway station. Please arrive by noon so that you can go up Nilachal hill to Kamakhya Temple the same afternoon; the general queue can take several hours, and paid special-entry darshan tickets are usually sold at the temple (not included). Kamakhya is revered as the place where the yoni of Goddess Sati fell,…
Guwahati to Shillong · Umiam Lake — If you want a quieter darshan, go back to Kamakhya early in the morning before breakfast. Then drive about 100 km to Shillong (about 3 hours), stopping at Umiam Lake (Barapani). In the afternoon, see Ward's Lake, the Don Bosco Museum (usually closed on Sundays; entry fee extra) and Police Bazaar for local shopping. Shillong is at about 1,500 m, so evenings are cool all year.
Day trip to Cherrapunji (Sohra) — After breakfast, drive about 55 km to Cherrapunji (about 1.5–2 hours) through the Khasi hills. Visit Nohkalikai Falls, one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in India, the Seven Sisters Falls (best in and just after the monsoon), Mawsmai Cave with its limestone formations (entry fee extra; narrow passages) and the Eco Park. Views depend on the clouds, which can cover the falls for hours. Return to…
Shillong to Guwahati airport · Departure — After breakfast, drive about 125 km to Guwahati airport (3.5–4 hours, as the airport is on the far side of the city). If time allows, stop at Shillong Peak viewpoint on the way out (access depends on the Air Force station). Please book flights after 2 pm.

Good to know
Kamakhya Temple is usually closed for about three days during the Ambubachi Mela in June, and queues before and after are very long. Check the dates if you travel in June.
At Kamakhya, the general queue can take 2–5 hours on busy days. Paid special-entry tickets are usually sold at the temple counter; buy only from official counters, not from touts.
Animal sacrifice is part of some rituals at Kamakhya. Families who prefer not to see it can ask the priests or our driver which areas to avoid.
Shillong and Cherrapunji are cool all year (often 8–15 °C in winter evenings). Carry a light jacket, an umbrella and shoes with grip for wet steps.
Meghalaya roads are winding. If anyone gets motion sickness, carry tablets and keep the morning meal light on travel days.
Questions travellers ask
How much time does Kamakhya darshan take?
On normal days the general queue is usually 1–3 hours; on Tuesdays, Saturdays, Navratri and festivals it can be 4–5 hours. Paid special-entry darshan reduces the wait. We suggest arriving by noon on day 1 and, if needed, going again early on day 2.
Can we add Dawki or Mawlynnong?
Yes. Dawki (boating on the Umngot river) and Mawlynnong village are about 80–90 km from Shillong and need a full day, so add one night. Ask us for a 5-day version.
Do we need a permit for Meghalaya?
No. Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit for Assam or Meghalaya. Carry ID for hotel check-ins.
Is this trip suitable for senior citizens?
Yes, with care. Kamakhya involves standing in queues and some steps. Cherrapunji viewpoints have steps and wet paths, and Mawsmai Cave has narrow passages that seniors can skip.
