Highlights

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Arrive Guwahati · Drive to Bhalukpong — Our driver meets you at Guwahati airport or railway station and drives you to Bhalukpong on the Assam–Arunachal border (about 230 km, 5–6 hours) via Tezpur. Your Inner Line Permit (ILP) is checked at the Bhalukpong gate, so keep printed copies ready. Check in at your hotel near the Kameng river and rest for the climb tomorrow. Arrive in Guwahati before noon if you can.
  2. Bhalukpong to Dirang via Bomdila — After breakfast, drive up the Kameng valley to Dirang (about 140 km, 5–6 hours) through Tenga and Bomdila. In Bomdila, stop at the Bomdila (Gontse Rabgyal Ling) Monastery and the market if time allows. Dirang sits in a river valley at about 1,500 m, so it is a good place to sleep before the high pass tomorrow. Evenings are cool; keep a jacket handy.
  3. Dirang to Tawang over Sela Pass — Leave after an early breakfast and drive to Tawang (about 140 km, 6–7 hours). Weather permitting, the driver takes the old road over Sela Pass (about 4,170 m) and past Sela Lake; in bad weather he uses the Sela Tunnel instead. Stop at Jaswant Garh, the memorial to Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, who fought here in the 1962 war. Reach Tawang by late afternoon, check in, and rest because Tawang is…
  4. Tawang sightseeing · Monastery and War Memorial — In the morning, visit Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgyal Lhatse), founded in the 17th century and the largest Buddhist monastery in India; the morning prayers and the museum are worth the time (museum entry paid locally). Then see the Giant Buddha statue and Urgelling Gompa, where the 6th Dalai Lama was born. In the late afternoon, visit the Tawang War Memorial, and stay for the light-and-sound…
  5. Nuranang Falls · Optional Bum La and Madhuri Lake — Today your car takes you to Nuranang (Jang) Falls, a tall waterfall about 40 km from Tawang (1.5–2 hours each way), with tea or lunch stops at Jang. If you would rather go to the Bum La border pass (about 4,600 m) and Madhuri (Sangetsar) Lake, we apply for the permit at the Tawang district office a day ahead; it needs a Tawang-registered vehicle at extra cost, and the army can refuse or cancel…
  6. Tawang to Dirang · Dirang Dzong — After breakfast, drive back over Sela to Dirang (about 140 km, 6–7 hours). In the afternoon, visit Dirang Dzong, an old stone fort village, and walk by the river; the hot springs and the Sangti valley are optional extras if time allows. This night in Dirang shortens tomorrow's long drive to Guwahati.
  7. Dirang to Guwahati · Departure — Leave Dirang by 6 am for the long drive to Guwahati (about 320 km, 9–10 hours with breaks) via Bomdila, Bhalukpong and Tezpur. We drop you at Guwahati airport or railway station in the evening. Please book flights or trains departing after 7 pm, or add a night in Guwahati and fly the next day, because mountain roads can be delayed by landslides or traffic.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask

What permit do we need for Tawang?

Every Indian traveller needs an Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit (ILP), applied for online with a photo ID. We help you apply and the fee is included. Bum La needs a separate permit from the Tawang district office, which we arrange on request.

Is Bum La included?

No. Bum La and Madhuri Lake are optional. They need a separate permit, a Tawang-registered vehicle at extra cost and army clearance, and they are often closed by snow or for security reasons.

Is this trip suitable for senior citizens?

Only for fit senior citizens with their doctor's approval. The drives are long, and Sela and Tawang are at high altitude. People with heart or lung conditions should not go to Bum La.

Why do we stay in Dirang on the way back?

Tawang to Guwahati is about 460 km on mountain roads, which is too long for one day. A night in Dirang splits it into two safer drives.

Does the price include flights?

No. The package starts and ends at Guwahati. We can book flights from Vijayawada or Hyderabad separately and send you a combined quote.
