Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Madurai · Meenakshi Amman temple — Our driver meets you at Madurai airport or railway station and takes you to your hotel (20–30 minutes). In the late afternoon, visit Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple; allow 2–3 hours, as the complex is very large and queues build up in the evening. Stay on for the night palliyarai ceremony, when Sundareswarar is carried to Meenakshi's shrine (usually around 9 pm). Mobile phones are not allowed…
Madurai to Rameswaram · Pamban bridge — After breakfast, drive about 175 km (3.5–4 hours) to Rameswaram, crossing the Pamban road bridge, with a view of the railway bridge alongside. Check in and rest. In the evening, visit Ramanathaswamy temple for a first darshan and to see its long pillared corridors. Keep the next morning free for the theertham baths.
Agni Theertham · 22 theertham baths · Dhanushkodi — Start early with a sea bath at Agni Theertham, then go into the temple for the 22 theertham baths, where an attendant pours water from each well over you (ticket bought at the temple; carry a change of clothes). After changing, have darshan of Ramanathaswamy. Later in the morning, drive about 20 km to Dhanushkodi and Arichal Munai, the end of the island, and return by early afternoon. In the…
Rameswaram to Kanyakumari · sunset at the tip — After breakfast, drive about 310 km (6–6.5 hours) along the coast via Thoothukudi to Kanyakumari, with a lunch break on the way. If time allows, you can stop at Tiruchendur Murugan temple by the sea (adds about 1.5 hours). In the evening, have darshan of Kanyakumari Bhagavathy Amman and watch the sunset from the shore. The temple usually asks men to remove their shirts before entering.
Kanyakumari sunrise · Vivekananda Rock · departure — Wake early to watch the sunrise over the sea. After breakfast, take the ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue (optional, tickets paid locally; ferries stop in rough sea). Good to know
Mobile phones are not allowed inside Meenakshi Amman temple, and many Tamil Nadu temples do not allow photography inside. Use the deposit counters.
Temples here usually close from about 12:30 or 1 pm to 4 pm. Plan darshans for the morning or evening.
For the theertham baths you will get fully wet. Carry a towel, a change of clothes and a plastic bag; changing rooms near the temple charge a small fee.
Wear modest traditional clothing; shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed in most temples. At Kanyakumari Bhagavathy Amman, men are usually asked to remove shirts.
Many families perform tarpanam or pitru karyam at Agni Theertham. Tell us in advance and we can suggest local priests (paid directly).
Questions travellers ask
Can we bathe in all 22 theerthams?
Yes. Buy the ticket at the temple counter and an attendant takes you from well to well. It takes about 45–60 minutes.
Is Dhanushkodi always open?
The road to Arichal Munai is usually open in daylight hours but can be closed in bad weather or rough sea. We will try again later in the day if needed.
Can we end the trip in Madurai instead of Trivandrum?
Yes. Both are included. Madurai airport is about 5 hours' drive from Kanyakumari, Trivandrum about 2.5 hours.
Can we add Tiruchendur?
Yes. It is on the coastal road on Day 4 and adds about 1.5 hours. For a relaxed darshan, add a night in Tiruchendur.
Is the trip suitable for elders?
Yes. Most temples have level corridors, but the theertham baths involve walking on wet floors. Day 4 is a long drive of about 6 hours.
