Good to know
On full-moon nights and during Karthigai Deepam, lakhs of devotees come to Tiruvannamalai. Hotel rates rise sharply and roads near the temple are closed to cars; tell us your dates early.
Girivalam is traditionally done barefoot and clockwise, keeping the hill on your right. Start early in the morning outside full-moon days to avoid heat.
Most temples here usually close from about 12:30 pm to 4 pm. Mornings and evenings are the best time for darshan.
Modest traditional clothing is expected. Some temples do not allow photography inside the sanctum area.
Kanchipuram silk shops close to the temples can be pushy. Buy only if you wish; the driver will not insist on any shop.
Questions travellers ask
Can we plan this trip around a full moon?
Yes. Tell us the Pournami date you want, and we will put Day 1 on that date so you can do Girivalam at night. Expect bigger crowds and higher hotel rates.
Can elders do Girivalam?
The walk is 14 km and takes 4–5 hours. Elders can go around the hill by car instead and stop at the Ashta Lingams, which many devotees do.
Is there a dress code?
Modest traditional dress is best: dhoti or trousers with a shirt for men, saree or churidar for women. Avoid shorts and sleeveless tops.
Can we add Tirupati?
Yes. Kanchipuram to Tirupati is about 110 km. We can add one or two nights in Tirupati and end the trip at Renigunta airport.
Can we stay at Ramana Ashram?
The ashram has limited rooms that must be requested directly from the ashram. Our price includes a hotel stay.
