Health: Kedarnath is at about 3,583 m and Badrinath at about 3,300 m. The Uttarakhand health department advises a medical check-up before the yatra, especially for senior citizens and anyone with heart, blood pressure, diabetes or breathing problems.
On the trek, walk slowly, drink at least 2 litres of water a day, do not trek on an empty stomach and avoid alcohol and smoking. If you feel breathless, dizzy or have chest pain, stop and go to the nearest medical relief post (emergency numbers 104 and 108).
Pack layers for 0–15 °C, a warm jacket, cap, gloves, a raincoat or poncho, walking shoes with grip and a small torch. Keep a light day bag for the Kedarnath night.
Mountain roads can close because of landslides, especially in monsoon. The order of darshan or overnight stops may change at short notice for safety.
Questions travellers ask
Should we trek to Kedarnath or take the helicopter?
The trek is about 16–18 km one way from Gaurikund and climbs about 1,600 m; fit adults usually take 6–9 hours up, and ponies or palkis cost extra. Helicopters fly from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi in about 10 minutes. Tickets are sold only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal and need your Char Dham registration number; seats sell out fast and flights are often delayed in bad weather, so keep a pony as a backup. Do not pay any agent who claims to sell tickets outside the official portal.
When are Kedarnath and Badrinath open?
Usually from around late April or May (Akshaya Tritiya for Kedarnath) until around Diwali–Bhai Dooj in October or November. Exact dates are announced each year by the temple committee. Both temples are closed from about November to April.
Can senior citizens do this yatra?
Many do, after a medical check-up and their doctor's approval. Badrinath is close to the road. Kedarnath needs the trek, a pony, a palki or a helicopter. People with serious heart or lung conditions should take medical advice first.
Why do we stay a night at Kedarnath?
The trek takes most of the day, and darshan queues are shortest in the early morning. Staying overnight means you are not rushing down in the dark, and you can attend the evening aarti.
Can we start from Delhi?
Yes. Delhi to Haridwar is about 220 km (5–6 hours), which adds a day or a very long first day. We can arrange Delhi pickup and drop at extra cost.
