A 4-day private trip in the Garhwal Himalaya that starts and ends at Rishikesh or Haridwar. You stay a night at Sari village for the short walk up to Deoria Tal lake, then two nights at Chopta for the trek to Tungnath, the highest of the Panch Kedar Shiva temples, and on to the Chandrashila summit. The temple is closed in winter, roughly November to April, when the same route becomes a snow trek to Chandrashila.
Highlights
Short trek to Deoria Tal, with the Chaukhamba peaks reflected in the lake on clear mornings

Two nights at Chopta in meadows and rhododendron forest
Devprayag confluence, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi form the Ganga
Omkareshwar Temple at Ukhimath, the winter seat of Kedarnath
Winter option: snow trek to Chandrashila when the temple is closed
Day-by-day itinerary
Rishikesh to Sari village via Devprayag and Ukhimath — Our driver picks you up from Rishikesh or Haridwar (railway station or hotel) early in the morning, or from Dehradun airport (about 35 km more), and drives to Sari village (about 190 km, 7–8 hours) via Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Ukhimath. Stop at Devprayag, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet to form the Ganga, and at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, where Lord Kedarnath is worshipped in…
Deoria Tal trek · Drive to Chopta — Start early and walk up the stone path from Sari to Deoria Tal (about 2.5 km, 1–1.5 hours up, a moderate climb; forest entry fee paid locally). On a clear morning the Chaukhamba peaks are reflected in the lake; camping at the lake itself is not allowed. Walk back down to Sari for breakfast, then drive to Chopta (about 25 km, 1 hour). The afternoon is free to rest and walk in the meadows around…
Tungnath temple and Chandrashila trek — Start by 6 am and trek about 3.5 km on a paved but steep path to Tungnath temple (2–3 hours up), the highest of the Panch Kedar shrines at about 3,680 m; ponies are available at your own cost. The temple is usually open from about May to early November and closes for winter, when Lord Tungnath's doli moves down to Makkumath, so check the dates before travel. Fit trekkers can continue about 1.5…
Chopta to Rishikesh or Haridwar · Departure — After breakfast, drive back to Rishikesh or Haridwar (about 210 km, 7–8 hours) via Ukhimath, Rudraprayag and Devprayag. We drop you at Rishikesh or Haridwar railway station, your hotel, or Dehradun airport by evening. Please book trains or flights departing after 7 pm, because hill roads can be delayed by landslides or traffic.

Good to know
Tungnath is at about 3,680 m and Chandrashila about 4,000 m. Walk slowly, drink water and turn back if you feel breathless or dizzy. Consult your doctor first if anyone has heart, blood-pressure or breathing problems.
Tungnath temple is usually open from about May to early November. The closing and opening dates are announced each year by the temple committee; check before you book a temple visit.
Chopta has only basic camps and cottages, with limited hot water and power. Pack a warm jacket, thermals, cap, gloves and a torch in every season.
In winter (December–March), snow can close the road to Chopta for a day or more. Our driver will change the plan for safety, and extra costs from closures are not included.
Mobile signal is weak at Chopta; BSNL and Jio work best. There are no ATMs at Sari or Chopta, so carry cash.
Wear trekking or sports shoes with good grip. The Deoria Tal path is uneven, and the Tungnath path is steep and can be icy in winter.
Questions travellers ask
How difficult are the treks?
Deoria Tal is about 2.5 km one way (1–1.5 hours up). Tungnath is about 3.5 km one way on a paved but steep path (2–3 hours up for most people), and Chandrashila is 1.5 km more and steeper. Healthy adults and active children usually manage them at a slow pace.
Can we do Tungnath darshan in winter?
No. The temple usually closes around early November and reopens around May. In winter, the deity is worshipped at Makkumath, and the trek to Chandrashila becomes a snow trek.
Can elderly parents come?
Elderly parents who are fit can do Deoria Tal slowly, and ponies are available on the Tungnath path. Please get a doctor's approval first, because of the altitude.
Why are the stays not 3-star hotels?
Sari and Chopta are small mountain settlements with simple guesthouses and camps only. We choose the best available clean stays with attached or close-by toilets.
Can we start from Delhi?
Yes. Delhi to Rishikesh is about 240 km, or 6 hours, so starting from Delhi adds a day. We can arrange Delhi pickup and drop at extra cost.
