Good to know
Phones, bags, belts and wallets made of leather are usually not allowed inside Kashi Vishwanath. Use the lockers at the gates and carry only cash, ID and puja items.
Traditional dress is preferred for darshan: saree or salwar kameez for women, and dhoti-kurta or kurta-pyjama for men. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not suitable.
Cars stop at the edge of the old city, and the lanes to the temple and the ghats are a 10–15 minute walk. E-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are available locally.
Mondays, Shravan month (July–August), Mahashivratri and Dev Deepawali bring very large crowds and long queues. Plan darshan early in the morning.
Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats are cremation grounds. Please do not photograph cremations, and be careful of people who ask for money for wood.
Questions travellers ask
How long does darshan at Kashi Vishwanath take?
On normal weekdays, the general queue is usually 1–2 hours. On Mondays and festivals it can be 3–5 hours. The paid Sugam Darshan ticket shortens the wait but is often sold out on busy days.
Can we perform Rudrabhishek at Kashi Vishwanath?
Yes. The temple trust usually lists Rudrabhishek and other pujas with fixed fees on its official website. We can help you book them; the cost is not included in the package.
Is the boat ride safe for elderly parents?
Yes. Rowing boats on the ghats are stable and slow, and you board from the steps. Ask for life jackets, which most boatmen carry. Avoid boating during high monsoon water (July–September), when the administration sometimes stops boats.
Can we add Prayagraj or Ayodhya?
Yes. Prayagraj is about 125 km (3–3.5 hours) and Ayodhya about 210 km (5 hours) from Varanasi. See our Ayodhya, Kashi & Prayagraj Yatra, or ask us to extend this trip.
